How to smooth a leather jacket: iron and steam
An iron or a steamer are the best household appliances to use when adjusting the folds on a leather jacket. But even without these tools, it’s still feasible to give leather clothing a fashionable appearance. Any smoothing technique must be used accurately. Hurrying will ruin the pricey material.
Classic approach
Peculiarities. Using a regular iron set at a low temperature and without the steam mode, the jacket is straightened. From the outside, iron the product. A thick cloth with tiny fibers is ironed through the leather. A waffle towel and gauze are not appropriate because a large structure will be clearly imprinted on the leather. If the thick lining does not get in the way, you can also iron the jacket from the inside out.
- Turn off the steam mode, set the regulator to 100-140 ° C.
- Straighten the part of the jacket with creases on the ironing board.
- Cover with a dense smooth fabric.
- Gently pressing, hold the heated iron on the problem area for a few seconds. (You can move it slightly from side to side. But actively moving the iron is not recommended, otherwise the leather may stretch and deform).
- Remove the fabric, wait until the leather cools down.
- Proceed to ironing the next area, repeating the algorithm.
- Use a special small board for ironing difficult areas.
- Iron the collar through a cloth on both sides, then lubricate with glycerin or castor oil, give the desired shape.
- Straighten the product on a hanger, leave to cool.
Turn the item inside out, iron it on an ironing board, and then use laundry soap to smooth out any creases on the leather skirt. A piece of paper should be placed on top to absorb any extra soap. Use the "Wool" mode to iron the trouble spots. Separately, iron the lining.
Steam treatment
Attributes. An iron or a specialized tool can be used for steaming. Folded areas are treated with steam. Read the information on the jacket tag before steaming. There’s a chance that steaming the item is forbidden. The clothing will become ruined when impregnations evaporate from the material due to the warm air.
- Hang the jacket with the front side out, zip up and straighten it.
- Turn on the steam mode on the device.
- Treat problem areas by lightly moving the device at a distance of 15 cm from the material.
- Leave the product to dry for hanger.
Avoid putting your hands on the treated area while working. You risk burning yourself or leaving stains on the material. Never spend more than five seconds in one spot. The product may deform as a result of overheating.
Natural straightening
Attributes. You can use a hanger or the back of a chair to properly present the product if you don’t have an iron. This method of straightening a wrinkled leather jacket will take some time. While thick products require a week, thin leather will "sag" in a few days.
- Straighten and shake the jacket.
- Throw it on a hanger or the high back of a chair.
- Straighten it out so that the product takes on a natural position.
- Leave it for a few days.
- To eliminate strong creases, use additional methods.
Using oil
Attributes. methodical approach. Ideal for removing creases from delicate leather and leather bags. You will need castor or nut oil, baby cream, glycerin, or Vaseline to soak the material. The leather will become shiny, elastic, and smooth after treatment.
- Before the procedure, wipe the leather with a damp cloth, wash off dirt stains, dry the product.
- Straighten the material as much as possible: squeeze a pillow into a bag, give a voluminous shape to the jacket with folded towels, stretch the wrinkled area of the skirt on an ironing board.
- Soak a cotton swab or cotton rag in a greasy product.
- Blot the folds from the outside, generously leaving greasy stains.
- Treat the area three to four times, taking short breaks.
- Hang the jacket on a hanger, leave until the product is completely absorbed.
- Polish the surface with a woolen rag.
Reviews claim that light-colored items may get colored stains from yellow oils. Consequently, using clear products or targeted moisturizing sprays is preferable. You should test the substance on a discrete area before using it.
Hot water help
Attributes. If you don’t have access to a steamer, a hot bath can assist in smoothing out a leather jacket. The jacket will get straightened out of the creases as the water evaporates and soaks into it. It is not advised to treat leather apparel right away following a chilly day outside. In order to prevent condensation from forming due to heat, the leather needs to "warm up."
- Pour hot water into a basin or bathtub (leave the tap open).
- Shake, straighten the clothing, hang it on a hanger over a container of water.
- Close the bathroom, leave the jacket for a quarter of an hour.
- Do not allow hot water to get in, the material may deform.
- Move the product to a dry room, leave to dry.
A press is used to level large products. This technique will help to make a wide leather coat more smooth. The press that is being used needs to have a smooth surface. Ideal books should be heavy. After leveling the leather, the press is set up and left for a full day. Subsequently, the product is hung in a melted state with buttons.
Eliminating folds on leatherette
Leatherette is popular, it looks no worse than real leather, but is several times cheaper. Leatherette is used to make a variety of products: from handbags to raincoats. The basic rules for ironing are the same for genuine and artificial leather. In order not to spoil the item and achieve the desired result, you should follow the ironing recommendations.
- Only from the inside . Under no circumstances (even through fabric) is it recommended to iron a jacket or other leatherette product from the outside. The upper part of the leatherette quickly melts, sticks to the sole of the iron, and comes off the cotton lining.
- Fabric lining . The item must be turned inside out, and a thick fabric must be placed between the front parts (it is recommended to insert rolled towels into the sleeves). Otherwise, the parts of the product may stick together under the influence of heat.
- Temperature conditions . Leatherette is often much thinner than genuine leather, so the temperature conditions are set to a minimum. This will prevent the material from melting. Steam mode is not used when ironing. Leatherette can be steamed, but only from the inside.
Alternative techniques can be used to effectively straighten artificial leather products without the need of household appliances. The table provides features of products that are used to smooth leatherette.
Table: Leatherette product smoothing techniques
| Product | Features |
|---|---|
| Water | — The product is sprayed with water from the inside; — distilled water is used to avoid streaks; — water is sprayed moderately so that it does not run down the material; — creases are straightened by hand |
| Glycerin | — It is used from the front side; — the product is applied with a clean cotton cloth; — wrinkled areas and creases are wiped; — quite a lot of glycerin is used (the material should shine) |
| Vinegar and conditioner | — A solution of equal parts is prepared – vinegar, water, fabric softener; — applied to the material from the outside with a spray bottle; — stains formed after drying are wiped with a damp clean cloth |
The leatherette is left to "rest" in a straightened form on a hanger in a hanging position following any procedures. The product must not be hung in a draft or next to any heating appliances.

Although it may appear difficult, smoothing a leather jacket or leatherette products is doable with the appropriate technique. For mild wrinkles, a cloth barrier and a low heat iron work well; for more delicate areas, steaming is a great alternative. To prevent any damage, always test a small section initially.
If you’re not comfortable using heat, a handheld steamer or hanging the jacket in a steamy bathroom can do the trick. While these methods may take a little longer, they are safer for the material, so patience is essential.
Your leather or leatherette items can maintain their original appearance with the correct maintenance. Just keep in mind that slow down and keep the surface away from direct heat to maintain the appearance and quality of the fabric.
