Care for a cycas palm at home

The sago palm, or cycas palm, is a distinctive and exquisite plant that can bring a hint of tropical elegance into any house. For indoor gardeners looking for something unique to add to their collection, it’s a popular choice because of its striking, feathery leaves and slow growth.

The cycas has maintenance requirements similar to other tropical plants, despite not being a true palm. It needs specific care to stay healthy, but it grows well in well-drained soil and bright light. This plant can thrive for many years and add a timeless touch to the interior design of your house if given the proper care.

Know what the cycas palm needs to thrive, whether you’re an experienced gardener or are just getting started with your indoor space. We’ll go over the necessary care instructions for your plant in the upcoming sections so it can thrive indoors.

The maximum number of wai that a slow-growing indoor flower can produce in a year does not significantly impact the flower’s overall height. It will take at least five years for young trees to develop a fully developed, lush crown, even under ideal maintenance conditions and with intensive feeding.

Lighting

Does not mind partial shade, but grows best in diffused light. For normal development, four hours a day in direct sunlight are sufficient.

When exposed to prolonged periods of inclement weather, the plant enters a dormant state that is indicated by a deceleration in leaf growth.

Watering

The flower needs infrequent moistening of the soil. The following ideas ought to direct you:

  • during the growing season (from late spring to early autumn), slight drying of the soil is allowed;
  • during half-sleep, which lasts from October to April, moderate dryness of the soil is allowed.

The duration and intensity of natural light are related to this schedule.

The crown shouldn’t get any moisture on it. The excess should drain into the tray and the liquid should completely moisten the soil mixture. Only use room-temperature, soft water.

Humidity

Since the plant prefers a high moisture content of 70–80%, frequent fine-sprayer air spraying is necessary. Wetting leaves is not a good idea.

Temperature conditions

For cycads, the ideal temperature range is +17 to +26 °C. The minimum that can be allowed is +13 °C.

What kind of soil does it like

Favors soils with low acidity or neutrality. Porousness is necessary for the mixture to allow the water to flow away and avoid stagnation.

Use pumice, pebbles, perlite, coarse sand, wood chips, granite, and coarse peat to help with drainage.

  • pumice or slag;
  • pine bark;
  • dolomite crushed stone;
  • peat;
  • charcoal;
  • large perlite;
  • some bone meal.

Soil made at home needs to be sterilised.

What to fertilize with

Although it doesn’t need much attention at home, the Cycas palm will appreciate extra feeding. Additives are added no more than once per month, from mid-spring to early autumn. Because the palm doesn’t bloom, it’s best to use nitrogen mineral mixtures or liquids that have the same amount of elements (NPK = 10-10-10), but at a dosage of half that suggested for indoor decorative plants.

Situations where it is not advisable to continue feeding:

  • state of stagnation – mainly in winter;
  • first 2 months after transplantation, if the old earth lump was destroyed;
  • the plant is sick.

Insect-related issues are also included in the last point.

Features of leaf development

Cycad juveniles are grouped together and resemble a circle. The shoots’ structure is delicate during the first few weeks of life, and they are easily damaged. Transplanting cannot be done during this time if the root system’s integrity is compromised and the soil mixture is completely changed.

The crown will flex in response to weak light as the plant reaches for the sun’s rays. Overexposure to light causes the leaves to shrink.

You must turn the pot 1/4 of a turn each day in order to get uniform leaves. This needs to be continued until the new growth becomes more robust.

How to deal with pests

Vagamo USGeekbuying WW

Cycads, like all houseplants, are susceptible to insect invasion. Once pests are identified, you should treat the area around the flower and quarantine it. Inspect the green "neighbors" in the vicinity for insects.

Scale insect

Resides in the crown of the fronds, but it hides in the lower section. The nearly invisible white larvae roam freely along the palm tree, while the dark-colored adult individuals reside in a preferred location.

Insects have a waxy covering on their back that resembles a shield, making pest control more difficult. It offers defense against pesticide effects. As a result, the battle against the pest is split into multiple phases:

  • collection of adult individuals manually or with a soft brush;
  • treatment with contact and systemic insecticides three times with a break of 5 days.

The procedure is done either in the morning or in the evening.

Mealybug

Lives on the palm tree’s above-ground and underground roots. It roams freely through parts of the plant that are accessible to it at any stage of development. The insect has a small, oval-shaped appearance and is covered in white hair.

Using a sponge dipped in a soap solution, adult individuals are mechanically collected in order to combat the pest, and an insecticide is then applied. It takes four procedures, separated by five days of rest. The top portion is sprayed, and the material seeps into the soil until it is fully moist.

Aphid

An unusual pest for cycads that primarily flies from another plant and only rarely appears. It only attaches itself to tender, young leaves.

Phosphorus is the primary active ingredient in the preparations used to treat the crown. Three times, separated by one week, the procedure is carried out.

Plant mites

They land on the caudex, or the space above ground between the root and the crown of the trunk, or stump, and on the leaves. They create hardly perceptible webs, and because of their tiny size, one must closely inspect the plant to identify them.

Species-to-species, the color ranges from brown to marsh green. To get rid of insects, apply an acaricide three times a week.

How to trim and care for leaves

Cycad trimming motivations:

  • disease that damaged the crown;
  • die-off, which is characterized by the frond lowering to a horizontal position or a strong tilt;
  • mechanical damage during transportation.

Activated carbon or crushed wood are used to treat wounds. Pruning is only allowed when wearing heavy rubber gloves.

You can give the plant a warm shower or a light summer rain if the leaves are too dusty, but make sure to use a napkin to wipe it dry afterward. To prevent pests and pathogens from entering the soil with the water, cover the soil in the pot with polyethylene before washing.

There are a few different approaches to the long and tedious process of growing more sago palms at home.

Vegetative

On the caudex of adult perennial specimens, shoots emerge. The location of the shoots rises with age of the cycad; initially, they form closer to the ground. Children with a diameter of at least 3 cm are suitable for propagation, though larger is preferable.

It is best to separate them in February or March, but not before the growing season starts. If the manipulations are done later, the shoot will die because the roots won’t have time to form before winter.

The surface is cleaned to remove any dirt before being separated from the mother plant. A portion of the soil is temporarily removed if needed. The ideal tool for this occasion is a sterile chisel.

To do as little harm as possible to the mother plant, the first cut is made at the point of narrowing. Severe damage to the caudex may cause rotting and eventual death. The most even cut should remain after separation, with no chips or bumps.

It’s interesting to note that a woman may not be able to perform the process of separating the cuttings due to the high density of the caudex; instead, you will need to seek assistance from a member of the stronger sex.

The cut site is treated with garden pitch or sprayed with a fungicide to reduce the amount of damage to the palm, and it is then left to dry for a week. From the obtained cutting, the fronds are removed. They shouldn’t exist while roots are growing.

The future bush is planted in perlite, deepening by one-third of its height, after the cut site at the shoot has been treated with a rooting agent and cleaned with a fungicide. There is a one-year rooting period. Once a functional subterranean system has formed, the sprout is planted in mature soil.

Seeds

Since the indoor cycad plant hardly ever throws away its flowers, seed material will not be available. The germination of palm seeds is rapidly lost, and storage of the seeds is limited to six months. The chance that something will sprout from the materials that have been stored gets smaller each month during this time.

The extracted seeds need to be specially prepared.

  • soak for a week in water, which should be completely renewed every 24 hours;
  • remove the shell;
  • scarification – damage the outer coating with an emery stone;
  • leave in water for another day, the temperature should be at least +28 ⁰C.

First, a soil mixture made of brick chips is used. Halfway down, the seeds are pushed sideways into the "soil".

The following circumstances are most likely conducive to germination:

  • temperature from +20 to +27 ⁰C;
  • diffused light or partial shade;
  • air humidity 70% – to create such an atmosphere and maintain it, a plastic bag is put on the container with crops with daily ventilation of the greenhouse.

There is a maturation period of 100–250 days. Only after one true leaf has formed is a transplant into an adult substrate performed.

Transplantation

Almost every one to one and a half years, young plants are transplanted into larger containers as they grow. To keep the soil from being depleted, it is sufficient to replenish the top layer of a large specimen. In cases where the old pot has become small or where there is a rhizome disease, a complete transplant is performed, along with a replacement of the soil mixture. In the latter scenario, the lump remains intact.

An adult cycad’s preferred palm mixture of soil or store.

The first half of spring, or just before the growing season starts, is the ideal time. In the new pot, drainage is arranged from top to bottom.

Important: You cannot select a container based solely on its larger size than the previous option. A discrepancy in diameter of up to 3 cm is acceptable. Cramping the rhizome is necessary to prevent it from rotting.

Aspect Care Tips
Watering Water moderately, allow the topsoil to dry out between waterings.
Lighting Place in bright, indirect sunlight for healthy growth.
Temperature Maintain room temperature between 15-25°C (59-77°F).
Humidity Prefers moderate humidity, mist leaves occasionally if the air is dry.
Fertilizing Feed once a month with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season.
Repotting Repot every 3-4 years in well-draining soil to avoid root rot.

It’s not hard to take care of a cycas palm at home. This slow-growing plant can be made to grow well indoors with the correct amount of light, water, and occasionally fertilizer.

Keep in mind that cycas palms prefer their soil to dry out in between waterings, so try not to overwater them. Keeping your surroundings warm and providing indirect sunlight will also contribute to the health of your plant.

Your cycas palm will reward you with its lovely, distinctive appearance and a touch of tropical charm when you give it the care it needs.

When done correctly, taking care of a cycas palm at home is quite easy. This unusual plant prefers bright, indirect light and needs little watering; in between waterings, let the soil dry out. It will remain healthy and lively if the air around it is kept humid and if it is occasionally fed during the growing season. Cycas palms can be a durable and eye-catching addition to any indoor area with a little care and attention to their requirements.
