Nowadays, specialty stores carry a large selection of tulle, enabling you to create a totally unique atmosphere in every room – from airy and light to opulent and sophisticated.

  • "Net", as the name suggests, is a fabric with a perforated texture. This textile has many colors, which allows you to fully express your imagination when creating the color scheme of the room. This tulle will perfectly transmit light. A mesh curtain looks great both as an independent window decoration and as an addition to heavier curtains. However, this type of tulle has one significant drawback – dust particles accumulate on it extremely actively, which should be taken into account, especially if you are allergic.
  • Organza is a fairly dense and wear-resistant material, despite its lightness and transparency. Polyester is used as the raw material for its production. This tulle will not accumulate dust, and it is quite convenient to use – it does not wrinkle and dries quickly.
  • Veil is another type of fabric that can last quite a long time. However, unlike the others, it has a matte structure and a translucent appearance. Does not require supplementing with curtains. Veils are made from cotton, silk and wool fibers.
  • Muslin is a natural or synthetic fabric of a special plain weave, which provides it with strength. The material is light and airy, easy to drape, it allows you to create a unique atmosphere in the room.
  • Kiseya, or thread curtains, is a lightweight fabric made from individual threads of cotton, linen or silk, fastened together only at the top. It is distinguished by excellent air permeability, lightness, richness of colors and decor.
  • Chiffon is a thin, flowing translucent fabric made of silk or cotton. It gives products an exquisite look, allows you to create noble ensembles in combination with other materials for sewing curtains. But it is not very convenient to process, the unstitched edge can creep along the threads. Also, a chiffon curtain is not very durable.

Without using an iron, you can quickly iron large tulle by using a handheld steamer or the steam from a hot shower to gently remove wrinkles. To keep curtains looking crisp and tidy, starch them by dissolving starch in water, dipping them, and allowing them to dry naturally.

How to wash curtains

Every fabric type has unique washing characteristics. For instance, polyester "feels" fantastic when washed at a normal temperature of between 40 and 60 degrees in an automatic machine. The same holds true for nylon fabric, though it is not advised to use chemical bleaches on it. However, you need to take extra care not to harm the organza and veils. The mode should be delicate washing, or it can be done by hand, and the temperature shouldn’t go above thirty degrees.

Tip: To make curtains shinier, pour a tablespoon of vinegar into the washing machine’s drum.

Still, there are a few general guidelines for cleaning tulle curtains that will help you use homemade solutions to tackle even the toughest dirt.

  • Before washing, just shake off the dust from the curtains first.
  • The product should be pre-soaked for several hours in warm water with the addition of powder or salt (a tablespoon per 10-liter basin).
  • When hand washing, tulle should not be rubbed hard, it is enough to lightly squeeze the material. But thorough rinsing is required until the water becomes clear.
  • When washing in a machine, place the product in a special bag or pillowcase. Set the temperature to 40 degrees.
  • Do not pour in a lot of washing powder so that the product is rinsed well and there are no streaks left on it. When hand washing, rinse first in warm water, and finally in cool water.

If white curtains are in the kitchen, they are particularly prone to contamination because greasy or dust stains show up more clearly on them. Since boiling is not advised for these types of fabrics, we recommend you take into consideration a few "folk" methods that you can use at home to restore the tulle’s former whiteness.

Method No. 1

The mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia (measured in tablespoons) is needed to remove yellow plaque in a 1:3 ratio. Transfer the ingredients into a basin of hot water (about 60 degrees), into which the tulle is submerged for 30 minutes. The item is then carefully washed, wrung out to remove any remaining moisture, and hung from a stretched rope.

Method #2

Wet the fabric and gently lather it with a bar of laundry soap (a gel detergent can be used in its place). To stop the product from forming "flakes," add 250 grams of baking soda (roughly half of a standard pack) to a basin of water. Soak the tulle in the mixture for three hours. After a while, place it in the washing machine compartment and select the "silk" or "wool" or "hand wash" option.

Method #3

An atypical approach to restore curtains to their original whiteness, but the outcome surpasses all expectations.

  • The first stage consists of prolonged soaking of the fabric in a strong saline solution, which actively absorbs dust particles and gives a slight shine. Afterwards, you need to thoroughly rinse and wash the tulle with laundry soap. To consolidate the result, put the product in the washing machine.
  • The second stage is bleaching with green stuff. To do this, dilute a couple of drops of brilliant green and three tablespoons of table salt in five liters of warm water. It is very important not to disturb the proportions here – the solution should only be slightly turquoise. Leave the curtains in a basin for a couple of minutes. Then rinse thoroughly and hang to dry.

Advice: Use blueing (0.5 teaspoons per 10 liters of water or 1 cap in the washing machine) in place of brilliant green when bleaching.

Method No. 4

Even an old yellowed curtain will sparkle white again after bleaching, which will take at least a day. Soak the curtain in water containing a bag of boric acid (available at pharmacies) and a few spoonfuls of baking soda for a full day. Rinse the fabric in this composition on a regular basis. Use a gentle mode when washing the product after the allotted time has passed.

Important: even with a "innovative formula," it is preferable to avoid using modern bleaches that you buy. When these products are used for the first time, they produce excellent results; however, over time, the fabric will either collapse or turn yellow.
