Although caring for a Nolina reflexa isn’t hard, it does need some consideration for its particular requirements. This plant is ideal for sunny areas of your house because it can withstand drought and grows well in bright light. However, overwatering it can cause issues, so it’s critical to understand how to balance its moisture requirements.

You’ll be happy to hear that Nolina reflexa plants can be multiplied with a little perseverance and attention if you’re hoping to grow more of them. Finding out how to grow and propagate bottle trees can be a rewarding experience, whether you want to share them with friends or add to your collection of plants.

With its thick, trunk-like base and long, arching leaves, the Bottle Tree (Nolina reflexa) is an easy-to-care-for houseplant that brings a distinctive touch to your interior. Put it in a bright area, give it little water, and make sure the soil drains properly to avoid root rot if you want it to survive. It just needs the occasional feeding and minor trimming, not much work at all. Seeds can be used for reproduction, but it takes more time than offsets to separate them. Nolina reflexa can be a visually striking and low-maintenance addition to your indoor space if given the proper care.

Description of nolina

Although over thirty different species of the tree have been identified, only Nolina reflexa is domestically grown. This houseplant grows naturally as an actual tree. Its superficial root system is common to all plants that are compelled to live in arid environments. The nolina’s trunk develops a caudex—a unique cavity where moisture collects—at the bottom in order to survive in the desert.

Dense leathery leaves grow in a lush bunch on the top of the trunk. They are long and narrow, falling down. As you can see in the photo of the indoor plant "bottle tree", the crown forms a real fountain. When buying in a store, you need to take into account that nolina continues to grow for many years and over time may not fit on the windowsill. At home, the "elephant"s foot" does not bloom, and this is not expected from it. The tree already looks very decorative.

Necessary conditions for growing

Since a plant is a living thing, it requires specific environments to grow and develop. Your apartment’s microclimate will feel better the more it mimics Nolina’s natural habitats. Let’s think about variables like humidity, temperature, and lighting.

Lighting

Beaucarnea requires bright lighting, just like any other tropical plant. The tree can withstand direct sunlight well because of its leathery leaves and hard bark covering on the trunk; for this reason, it is best to plant it in the brightest area. This windowsill may be located in the south or southwest.

The plant pot should be moved near the window if the nolina is already big and rests on the ground. Nolina will start reaching for the light source if there is insufficient of it. Turn the Nolina pot a few degrees every now and then to avoid the trunk bending during growth for this reason. Expand the plant by the other side toward the light if curvature has already begun to emerge.

Temperature and humidity

Nolina is a desert-adapted plant, so it enjoys heat. The ideal temperature for the plant in the summer is between 23 and 25 degrees; in the winter, it can withstand a drop to 15 degrees. The "Elephant leg" tolerates less well at lower values. The plant may die if the temperature drops below seven degrees. Nolina feels remarkably better in the fresh air during the summer months when it’s sunny and dry.

An indicator of air humidity cannot be controlled, considering the natural habitats of bottle trees. Succulents don’t care about it. Nolina does not require additional spraying and feels exceptionally comfortable in any humidity. If you wish to lightly mist the leaves to remove any remaining dust, take care not to get any on the trunk. A wet bark may be the first to start rotting.

Plant care

Beaucarnea requires periodic fertilization, regular watering, and replanting. These processes give the plant the moisture and nutrients it requires, enabling it to develop. Nolina is easy to take care of at home:

  1. Watering should never be excessive. Excessive moisture in the pot is a direct path to ruining the nolina. Do not forget that in the natural environment the plant receives water extremely rarely. In spring and summer it is enough to water the tree twice a month, drain the water from the pan immediately. In winter, the plant can do without watering at all, especially if it is kept in a cool room. The need to moisten the soil may be indicated by the wrinkling of the trunk. In this case, lightly water the bottle tree.
  2. Top dressing is done only in spring and summer, during the period of active growth. It is necessary to use special fertilizers for cacti, dissolving them in water for irrigation. It is enough to fertilize nolina 2-3 times a month.
  3. A young tree is replanted annually, each time slightly increasing the diameter of the pot. Since with proper care in the house nolina lives a very long time (15-20 years and longer), over time replanting becomes difficult, because the "elephant"s foot" reaches impressive sizes. Replanting large nolinas is carried out only as a last resort, for example, if the trunk has rotted. A healthy adult plant is not disturbed, just replace the top layer of soil in the pot.

Choosing the right pot and soil

The presence of caudex, the kind of root system, and the height of the trunk should all be taken into account when selecting a pot for beaucarnea. Tall, narrow containers are not ideal for elephant’s foot plants because they are prone to toppling over after transplanting. The pot needs to have multiple drainage holes and be low and wide. Because of the container’s ability to quickly dry out the soil and prevent water from standing still, the trunk won’t rot. Fill one-third of the pot with expanded clay drainage before replanting.

This tree needs light, loose, and breathable soil. The simplest option is to purchase premade substrate for succulents from a garden center. You can combine such soil with a few handfuls of expanded clay to help oxygen get into it. If you prepare the soil mixture yourself, remember that the proportions should be 2:1:2:1:1 for clay soil, sand, leaf humus, and expanded clay. You can add charcoal chunks to the soil for extra nutrition and disinfection.

Replanting rules

Replanting a nolina that you purchased in an inappropriate pot is advised as soon as possible. Get everything ready, then begin the transplant process.

  1. Remove the plant from the old pot and inspect the roots. Rotten areas need to be cut off and the wounds powdered with crushed charcoal. Dry the nolina a little before planting if the soil was too wet.
  2. Drainage is placed on the bottom of the pot and a small mound of soil is poured, lightly compacted. Then the nolina is installed vertically, the roots are straightened and covered with soil.
  3. Make sure that the trunk is not buried deep when planting, otherwise it may rot. Only the roots should be in the ground. Some people try to bury part of the trunk because there is damage on it, this is absolutely forbidden. Over time, the damaged area will definitely be overgrown with bark.
  4. After planting, the soil around the plant is compacted to give the pot stability. If the weight of the container with soil is not enough to hold the tree vertically, you can put several decorative stones on the surface of the soil.
  5. After the procedure is completed, the "elephant"s foot" is placed in a shaded place and not watered for 2-3 days. If the purchased plant was flooded and the trunk began to rot, you will have to stop watering for 2 weeks. The moisture reserve inside the caudex will help the nolina survive this time safely.

Sometimes, multiple nolinas are planted in a single container to add even more decoration to the interior. When planting, plants that are about the same age are chosen. You may take three or five pieces. Plants are placed in a broad pot with enough space between them so that their trunks just barely touch. The trees will eventually grow together and take on a distinctive appearance. It is preferable to start with nolinas of varying heights when group planting.

Reproduction methods

Geekbuying WWGeekbuying WW

Because bottle trees can be pricey in stores, some enthusiasts choose to grow their own fresh specimens at home. Two methods of reproduction are seeds and lateral shoots.

When shoots finally emerge at the base of the trunk, they need to be sliced with a sharp knife and put in a glass with a rooting agent solution to begin the process of rooting. Examine every shoot once in a while to find the roots. Cut off the rotting portion of the stem and put the shoot back in the water if it starts to rot at the cut site. You have to refill the glass with water all the time. Do not hurry to plant if roots start to show. Let them grow to a minimum of 0.5 cm. The young plant can then be inserted into the ground.

Nolina planting seeds are available in the store. They’re pretty big.

  1. Before planting, the seed material is soaked for 10-12 hours in a solution of zircon.
  2. Then place the seeds on the surface of a mixture of sand and substrate for cacti.
  3. Cover the container with plastic wrap on top.
  4. For faster germination, keep the plantings warm, at a temperature of 25 degrees.
  5. Wipe condensation off the film daily, air out the crops.
  6. A month later, when the seedlings grow up, replace the film with plastic cups.
  7. Pick out young plants at 2 months, and plant them in a permanent pot at six months.

Naturally, self-propagation means that it will take a while to produce a truly amazing tree. However, you’ll receive a robust, healthy plant that is perfectly suited to your apartment’s environment.
